Below
are some 'tips' and examples of our restoration services.
Silver
Sterling Dresser Sets
Always were and probably always will be fashionable. The main considerations
on restoring these back to the original condition are that the replacement
parts are as original as possible.
FOR
EXAMPLE:
- New
brushes should be made of natural boar hair or nylon bristles
- Combs
must look to be made of tortoise shell
- New
Mirrors must be cut with a bevel
- All
must be filled and set properly
Garbage
Disposals
ARE THE MAIN SOURCE OF SILVERWARE DAMAGE!
But even what looks impossible to repair after being caught in one,
can almost always be restored, sometimes at half the price of a
new one. A priceless baby spoon ground up badly can probably be
saved by an experienced silversmith.
Knife
Blade Corrosion
Old silverware knife blades were made out of carbon steel alloy
and subject to rust if not dried immediately after use. They often
become pitted beyond repair, and must be replaced with new ones.
Stainless steel blades, which do not rust are a popular solution
to this problem. Most old style blades are now available in stainless
steel.
Sterling
& Dishwashers
KEEP SILVER OUT OF THE DISHWASHER! Dishwashers and garbage disposals
are like oil and water they just don't go together. A quarter of
a century ago dishwashers were made with one temperature setting
and only a few brands of detergent. Nowadays, the temperatures can
reach to near boiling which will, split seams on sterling knives
and remove oxidation (black patina). The large variety of new detergents
will spot and stain your silverware.
Your
sterling should be treated with tender loving care. Hand wash sterling
with a mild dish detergent and dry with a soft terry cloth towel
immediately after each use. This should keep your silver shiny and
bright for many years. Silver polishes are also available such as
3M Tarn-Shield, Wrights®, Twinkle®, W.J. Hagerty &
Sons polish.
Salt
Shaker Corrosion
Salt has a very corrosive effect on metals. Although it is fine to use salt in silver shakers and salt dishes, some preventive care is necessary. One of the best preventive measures is to empty and wipe out the shakers and lids after each use. This only takes a few minutes but doing this regularly will stop the salt corrosion.
If corrosion is observed, shakers can be placed in a covered container along with a small amount of ammonia. Work in a well ventilated space and let sit for 10 – 15 minutes. This process can be repeated 2 to 3 times.
If corrosion persists, give us a call at 215-925-8746 or toll free
